After completing our works successfully at HastingsAcademy, Econ were selected by East Sussex Council to carry out the complete enabling works package of the former secondary school.

The works involved demolishing the complete 33,000m2 site including all the hard standings.

We assumed the role as principal contractor throughout the works. As a principal contractor, Econ were responsible for securing the site with hoarding, providing all the welfare facilities, applying for Section 80 demolition notices and agreeing all permits with the local authorities.

In the pre-construction phase, Econ carried out the site investigations including asbestos surveys, topographical surveys, ecology surveys and GPR surveys.

Once on site, all isolations and capping of services was completed.

We then commenced the removal of asbestos and other hazardous materials including the removal of all fuels, oils and COSHH.

Finally the demolition was completed with all the granular arisings crushed to 6F2 and spread across the site on completion.

Our Client is extremely pleased at the way we, supported by Econ, have dealt with the situation. From the moment you confirmed that notifiable asbestos was present, a focused, concerted effort has been made by Econ to deal with the problem. The client was impressed at the speed in which Econ tabled a strategic proposal to the HSE to remove the asbestos, working 24/7 non-stop, to expedite the removal. The fact that the proposal, including approval by the HSE, was achieved in such a short timescale is credit to Econ. The proactive approach, while being flexible and accommodating to allow key ECR staff to work in a safe, isolated contained area, has really impressed the Network Rail team.
